Your Last Minute Stonewall Fix
Published July 01, 2009 @ 06:42AM PT
Though the 40th anniversary commemorations are officially over, there's one more piece of Stonewall coverage that you might want to check out. Just make sure your get your Stonewall fix in before July 7, because that's when the BBC is taking this link down.
This link right here goes to a 60-minute documentary from the BBC, "Stonewall: The Riots that Triggered the Gay Revolution." The documentary itself contains interviews with rioters, journalists and policeman who were on the ground in 1969, and explores the question of why, after decades of similar raids at LGBT establishments across the United States, it was Stonewall that exploded and became the rallying point of the gay rights movement.
It's a worthwhile 60 minutes. And come on...you know you'll feel better spending 60 minutes brushing up on your LGBT history, as opposed to 60 minutes watching Jon & Kate, right? :)

The Stonewall Riots was the beginner for the LGBT rights movement because it was the late 1960s, a period of change when some traditional attitudes were already fading. The event was a riot because of the necessary bravery by Stonewall Inn patrons so they could protect the establishment from raids. It's good that the BCC will be airing a documentary on the important Stonewall Riots because the riots is the beginner.
