Why Gay Bashing on Twitter is a Bad Idea

Published October 29, 2009 @ 10:58AM PT

TwitterWhen Kansas City Chiefs football player Larry Johnson took to the Twitter waves this week, he probably wasn't expecting it would cost him $213,000. But that's the amount Johnson will miss out on because of a one-game suspension after going ballistic on a Twitter heckler, calling the user a "fag." It's a Social Media 101 lesson for Johnson, and a reminder that if you're a celebrity or a sports star, having a Twitter account doesn't give you license to hate on folks.

In a rather weird rapid fire of Twitter updates, Larry Johnson responded to @jaredlaunius after Jared made a snarky remark about Johnson falling down on the football field whenever defensive linemen get near him. Johnson's response? It's straight outta the seventh grade:

"@jaredlaunius think about a clever diss then that wit ur fag pic. Christopher street boy. Is what us east coast cats call u."

Actually, forget seventh grade. Take that one all the way down to elementary school playground chomping.

The real kicker, to use a football pun, is that @jaredlaunius isn't even gay. Not that it matters -- the point of Johnson's comment was to use one of the meanest, nastiest terms out there as a way of beating somebody down.

But hundreds of thousands of dollars later, and a reputation that he's now a big homophobe, I'm not so sure Larry Johnson thinks his statement is funny anymore. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs have one of the worst records in the NFL. Maybe Johnson should worry about improving his team's strength, instead of using anti-LGBT talk to berate others.

I don't mean to be rude, but was any of that Tweet even in English?  All I got out of it was "fag" and "Christopher Street".  Are we sure he wasn't being invited to Pride?

The NFL has adequately disciplined Larry Johnson for homophobia, including the hundreds of thousands of dollars lost because of the penalty. Homophobia brings no benefit, as evidenced by Larry Johnson's penalty. Hopefully, the day will come when homophobic terms are not used against LGBT people or people for the purpose of putting them down. The comment which Larry Johnson put on Twitter to @jaredlanius is more on the immature side and is rude.

    I guess he didn't learn.

UPDATE: Johnson in an effort to make the hole he's digging even deeper, tells Kansas City reporters entering the locker room on Monday to "Get your faggot asses out of here." Lovely. [PFT/Arrowhead Pride]

I don't follow sports for this exact reason! Especially football, because they think that because they are famous and professional football players that they can do what ever they want. Its ridiculous!! What message do they think they are sending to all of the little kids that look up to them??!! I say he should be put on the bench permanently or else simply fired! Because other wise what will happen when he says something like that to one of his young "fans", if he has any. It should be prevented!!!

I've said this before, on a different thread, but football really is one of the most homoerotic sports on the face of the planet. Seriously, what other sport has men running around in tight pants, that show absolutely everything (even those things you don't want to see,) one guy reaches between another guys legs looking for a ball, and then once he gets the ball, passes it (or hands off) to another guy who is then tackled by a dozen other guys wearing tight pants that show everything, followed by a pat on the buttocks.

With that said, I still believe in our First Amendment Right to free speech, so long as it is not the government that is requiring these sanctions against him and it is his employer enforcing these sanctions, then so be it.

There are a couple of updates to this story. His father has come out and condemned his son's behavior. TWICE!

Here is an exerpt from what his father had to say Larry Johnson's father said he was angry and shocked by his son's use of gay slurs with reporters inside the Chiefs locker room on Monday.

"That's just not who we are and not what we believe," Larry Johnson Sr. told the  Kansas City Star of his son. "It's not how he was raised.

"It's tough for me as a father."

In addition, he went further to state: His voice comes through soft but pointed. He remembers his childhood in the Jim Crow South and understands the daggers of inequality and the tarnish of discrimination.

“I went through that,” he said. “My generation.”

Larry Johnson Sr. said that he vowed so many years ago that he would teach his children to treat everyone with compassion. He said he raised them to consider everyone equal, regardless of race, gender, beliefs or sexual orientation. He said it hurts that his son, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, used gay slurs in public two times in 24 hours.

“That’s just not who we are and not what we believe,” said the elder Johnson, 56. “It’s not how he was raised.
