Using the Book of Leviticus to Beat Gay Men Into Comas

Published October 14, 2009 @ 03:43PM PT

Holy Bible

As the U.S. Congress prepares to finally pass hate crimes legislation that includes protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, a bloody and gruesome example of why such hate crimes protections are needed is coming out of New York. Over the weekend, two men beat and mauled 49-year-old Jack Price near his home in Queens, New York. They left him for dead, crushing his lungs, breaking his jaw, and lacerating his spleen. His condition was so bad that when he was finally rushed to a hospital, he had to be put into a medically-induced coma so that doctors could treat him.

Disturbing. Brutal. Bigoted. Disgusting. And beyond these terms, what's another scary part? Friends of the perpetrators are saying that the hate crime was justified because of the book of Leviticus.

One of the friends gave an interview to WABC News in New York, and the commentary is repulsive.

"I don't want no man blowing me a kiss either. I mean things happen," said Marcel Gelmi, a friend of one of the attackers. "I've been beat up like that too, but you don't see me on the news and my family crying and this and that. Wounds heal."

Somehow I highly doubt that Gelmi has been beat up to the point where he had to be placed in a medically-induced coma so that doctors could save his life. Gelmi also showed the TV reporters a tattoo he has on his arm, from the book of Leviticus.

"Leviticus. You should not lay with a man as one does with a woman. It's an abomination."

Of course, if Gelmi actually bothered to open his bible instead of just tattooing religious right soundbytes onto his arm, he'd find that the real abomination is interpreting a biblical verse as license to violently assault people because of their sexual orientation. I don't seem to recall anything in the Bible where God blesses the beating, the lacerating of one's spleen, the breaking of one's jaw, or the crushing of one's lungs simply because one is gay.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown summed up this beating pretty damn well: "This is probably the most vicious and brutal incident that I've seen, captured as it was on videotape."

If these two men are guilty -- and all indications, including video that captured the horrific assault, seem to suggest that they will be -- they deserve to be held accountable for their actions. And if there was ever a reason to make sure that expanded hate crimes laws find their way to President Obama IMMEDIATELY, this is it.

I completely agree. The Bible does say that homosexuality is an abomination, but it also says that since everybody is made in the image of God, whoever takes life away from an inncoent human being should have his life taken from him. One of the Ten Commandments is "Thou shalt not murder". As an Evangelical Christian, I feel that all Christians must stand against what those two men did. Christ strongly disapproved of the murder of the innocent.

    Mathew 7:21-23

21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'....

Great evil has been done in the world supposedly in Christ's name...even Jesus rejects this.

I do not think shooting anyone will solve any of our problems with the people who use the Bible to support their hatred of people. All of us can choose what to use from the Bible to support our way of life. If one happens to see the peaceful, loving side of Christ, then one makes certain choices about how to deal with and overcome these kinds of attacks against our community. But it is not by shooting anyone. A life is a life.

The question about homosexuality in the bible is this... Is that what the bible says or is that what the bible reads?

As Dr. Mel White, Dr. Tim Smedes, Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, and many others say... that the bible is a book inspired by god, and written by man in the context of their time. You have to study that context in the time it was written to understand what the bible actually says.

By studying ancient Hebrew culture you will learn that the passages of Leviticus, and Romans so often used to caricature and condemn LGBT people, dont say anything on homosexuality or people who are homosexual. More or less the passages of Leviticus deal more with Men portraying themselves as women and that is wrong in the bible. Unfortunately because of this country's strong need for gender roles, the populace has perceived homosexual men to be more like women and therefore they feel that these passages apply despite their false perceptions of gay males. The passages of Romans  used to condemn LGBT play off of idolatry of what Paul considered false gods of lust and greed.

I too watched the newscast and I gotta tell you...

Bible thumpers who hurt others and use their bibles to justify it should be considered traitors to the u.s. on the grounds that eventually, they'll use their bible to take away everyone's rights.

As a Christian this is offensive and saddening. I hate it when violent hateful people try to use religion to justify their dispicable actions. The attackers say what they did was ok because God commands that a man not lay with another man? Maybe they should look up Matthew 22:37 where Jesus himself says the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, mind and soul and the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. He says "All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments". It doesn't matter what you believe about homosexuality, or anything else, you are still to love the people around you. Anyone that does not understand this concept does not understand God, and they need to keep his name out of it! I pray that this poor man and his family recover from this vicious attack.

As a resident of Queens, it is awful to be so near and yet so far away from the feelings that guide those who need to kill what they so obviously fear. It is almost a given in some ways to look at these kinds of crimes not just as hate crimes but as a form of self-loathing as well. Not that many men, it is sad to say (and I am sure not as many women either) are all that comfortable with their sexuality. The viciousness of this attack makes it clear just how exposed to their own problems poor Jack made them feel. When will this end? It will not end until all are accepted as equal and there is no legal discrimination which gives some the sense of freedom to attack that which they fear.

I don't seem to recall anything in the Bible where God blesses the beating, the lacerating of one's spleen, the breaking of one's jaw, or the crushing of one's lungs simply because one is gay.</blockquote>

When are we going to stop pretending that the Bible doesn't say to do exactly this?

Lev.20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

I understand the desire to be respectful of people's beliefs, but that's what it says. It's sad that people believe this is perfectly okay, but that's what it says. It's brutal and immoral and nobody should listen to it, but that's what it says and that's what people are hearing from their preachers every Sunday.

I believe in starting to work on the problem where it starts. For a whole lot of impressionable people, this is where it starts. Can we just quit pretending the Bible's not full of brutality? It's pointless and wrong to fight the attitudes of people who believe in taking (parts of) the Bible literally yet claim the Bible isn't absolutely jam-packed with this kind of rhetoric.

I agree Daria we should work on where the problem starts and that is the church. Since the church has no problem crossing the line of separation the state should have no problem crossing that line either and enforcing strong penalties, fines, and jail sentences for harboring hate against other human beings for any reason. We all know that words can kill more so than anything else. Hitlers genocide was harbored with words, then solidified into slaughter. The hate these pastors preach, what ex-gay organizations do to their victims is complicit with murder and this young mans tragic attack is just another shining example of the power of words.

Further to a comment I made last night, it is important to remember that anyone can and they unfortunately do use quotes from the Bible to support their views. But the laws here are not of the Bible, but of things we have made to help us all live together. We are not yet a theocracy. So, even if it says it in the Bible, it is not the law and thus until the entire LGBT community is given equal status under the law, this is what can and will continue to happen. Please, remember, we are not fighting really about the Bible. We are arguing for a full legal status that helps to ameliorate the feelings of righteousness of such hate crimes. If we are not fully citizens, we are, according to some, fair game.

I agree with you--this isn't a theocracy, and LGBTQI citizens should have completely equal status under the law.

All I'm saying is that a lot of these people aren't just grasping at what looks like a convenient defense for their bigotry--they believe the Bible (or at least the part about killing gays) is literally true and that they are justified in carrying out God's justice on earth, and that any manmade law to the contrary is wrong and antiChristian, and it does no good to our cause to pretend that their holy book doesn't say what it clearly does. I understand the desire to reclaim Christianity for goodness and social justice, but we can't just pretend the book doesn't say these horrible things. Better to just appeal to common sense and basic morality and Constitutionality than to do that.

Violence against LGBT people on the basis of sexual orientation is unjustified, thus the men who beat the gay man deserve to be sentenced for at least 20 years and be charged as committers of a hate crime. However, it's good that President Obama will sign the bill which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of hate crimes. The friend of the attackers spews nonsense when it comes to the Bible. Hopefully, the man who was beaten lives.

I saw the newscast and it is chilling. What surprises me is that this hasn't been picked up by the national television news networks. This story is important because it vividly exposes the spiritual terrorism to which gay people are subjected. So often Christians deny that they have any responsibility or are in any way complicit in the oppression of gay people. They don't even know their history. I heard Marc Mutty (head of the Protect Maine Marriage campaign to prevent same-sex marriage) say with a straight face that the Roman Catholic Church has been in the forefront of securing and protecting gay rights. Anyway, I'd like to know where these creeps go to church and what inspired a tatoo with the Leviticus passage.

I am off soon to the rally in support of Jack Price and as a statement against this type of beating. But gay people are not the only ones being violently attacked and sometimes the attacks are done with laws and sometimes are just pure and simple thefts of that which is ours. There is so much injustice in this country right now and not all of it is being done by people with tattoos proclaiming some religious mandate. It is truly time for all of us to realize just what is being done to us all rather than gang up on these poor slobs who are clearly not playing with a full deck.

Yes, i abhor what they have done. I think they should be judged by their actions and done that by their fellow citizens. Yet, beyond all of this lies a much greater and more evil presence in this country and that is the greed and the lust for power of the very wealthiest who have no social conscience at all and use such men as beat up poor Jack to divert and divide us while they merrily go about stealing everything in sight.

Just as all Christians do not believe as these two men do, not all the wealthy are to be damned but we do know that for the most part, those with a great deal of money tend to be only interested in hanging onto their portion of the pie and the rest of us be damned.

Posted by Deborah Emin on 10/17/2009 @ 08:30AM PT

  36. Deborah Emin

Now I am back from the rally and I can tell you it was quite an event. For those who are interested, there were not just main stream media in attendance but Bill Thompson who is running for mayor here, the borough president, Helen Marshall, Christine Quinn, the Speaker of the City Council, Anthony Weiner, a congressman from that district, John Lui, a city council member, Scott Stringer, the Borough President from Manhattan and a host of other elected officials who know that this is a serious crime and that the community needs to be reminded how many support them. It was quite an amazing gathering for a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon.

No one was thumping any Bibles on either side of the street. I would also like to add that Danny Rodriquez, one of the men charged with the beating of Jack Price, who was picked up in VA was turned in by his father, a corrections officer, who has taken responsibility for the way Danny has turned out. There is so much more than meets the eye in these crimes so it is always good to reserve judgement until all the facts are in.

That is my report, for now.

I have to say that from all the evidence thus far there is no reason to be bashing anyone for reading the Bible, this was not done out of some religious sense of justice. These kids are not readers let alone church goers. I think we are all setting up a false sense of injustice. This was purely some dumb kids who do not know better thinking it is fun and/or okay to beat up gays. The town is a bleak place and none of us would want to be stuck there, believe me. This whole discussion about the bible and its influence on the attack seems totally misguided.

    Miss emin...

Where is it from that these kids and even some adults acquire their hatred and intollerance of those who are different if not from the misused and even in some cases, misquoted bible ?

What other source of teaching is there that teaches that homosexuals aint human and/or that they should be put to death ?

Whether the folks who commit these attrocities against my fellow human beings go to church regularly and/or read the bible regularly doesnt matter because at some point in their lives...They were taught to hate and kill by someone or someones who does attend fundemental churches and/or does read the bible for no other reason than to find more fuel for their hellfire of hate.

That makes it very relevant to discuss the bible and fundemental christianity and even more relevant to discuss how both are being used to do evil.

I will accept your view of things but in my sense of being there, with feet on the ground of the scene where it happened, there is little to support your idea. But having said that, there is also just plain dumb human psychology that makes people behave in ways that are stupid and violent and atrocious. Many people do "hate" the other whether that other is a gay person or of another race or even a person with physical disabilities. Not all of this hatred derives from the reading of the Bible, or a misreading of the Bible, but from human psychology that makes us unable to deal with our own discomforts and thus to lash out and try to destroy that which causes us such pain.

I do agree that when people are looking consciously to do evil that they can use whatever they think will motivate people to enact these crimes for them. And I do agree that there is much evil in the world today as always. We have never been free of that. I just do not think that the entire fault for the amount of evil in the world, now or ever, lies in the Bible.

Posted by Deborah Emin on 10/19/2009 @ 01:51AM PT

  45. Chris Marshall

I question your understanding of psychology and more importantly sociology on these topics. In order for people to behave in such a way there has to be a support system for that belief. The extremely toxic atmosphere of the US when it comes to treating LGBT as equals, is a huge reason for such factors that caused these two men to do what they did.

The mainstream media shows LGBT as entirely promiscous, damnaged, sick minded, freakish additcs to self destruction. All to often the media refuses to show lgbt families as real families but more of a one out of a million idea to help perpetuate their bias of conflict and keep their ratings up as well as their viewers entertained.

The Davidic/Abarhamic dogmas are responsible for creating this atmosphere; this being well documented by anthropologist. While the media perpetuates the false stereotypes of LGBT that allow people to be entertained when they see us (usually in the form of ridicule and crude laughter), the Davidic religions perpetuate that being such a person, being LGBT, is a sin, a sickness, and evil that must be corrected, fixed or eliminated.

While some people do consciously look to do harm onto others, the factors that make it easy for them to do so have been created by society and perpetuated by society's religions. This is more of a societal problem more than anything else. While these two individuals knew exactly what they were doing, had they grown up in a different segment in society they would have certainly not done this.

As long as we allow this toxic atmosphere to continue and or spread, and support it with the hap hazard notion of "freedom of speech," such atrocities will be inevitable to avoid in the future. We must stop the source of this problem and that is the freedom to dehumanize, denigrate, and speak volumes of reasons for destruction, against innocent minority segments of society.

I agree, Martin, they are not true Christians. I know Christians who might not approve of LGBTQ people but they would never lay a hand on them or condemn them because the know "Do not judge lest ye be judged". The homophobes and other haters quite handily "forget" that little gem.

They side with Dr. Rev. Mel White on this issue about homosexuality and what the bible says as compared to what it reads. However... the only downside to these sights is that they find science to be a relevent source to build their arguments off of. Our enemies most often find science to be an opposing belief system that can be challenge and defeated with their opinions on their theology.

Having a Bible verse thrown at you is not quite enough to make people turn violent. Part of what makes young people in particular become violent is living where there is nothing to do and nowhere to go. Hopelessness is a huge factor in this and if you saw this place and those kids you might have some idea of what we are all up against. Because these are the ones who are truly in need of a stimulus package, something to make them truly happy to be alive.

Well...After tonight (10-29-2009), It'll be a federal crime for anyone to attack a member of the G.L.B.T. community and all I can say is...Its about fucking time. :)

    From WIKI:

In 1996, a controlled study of 64 heterosexual men (half claimed to be homophobic by experience and self-reported orientation) at the University of Georgia found that men who were found to be homophobic (as measured by the Index of Homophobia) were considerably more likely to experience more erectile responses when exposed to homoerotic images than non-homophobic men.

Denial of one's own sexual orientation makes you crazy.

IIRC, Leviticus also mentions mixed-fiber clothing is "an abomination."  When are we going to start seeing forced label checks?

This really has nothing to do with religion, except as an excuse for our culture's still-dominant sexual repression and its backlash.
