The GOP's "Man of Ideas" is as Anti-LGBT as They Come
Published June 09, 2009 @ 07:10AM PT

Republicans held a major fundraiser event last night in Washington, graced by the presence of Sarah Palin, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Orrin Hatch, Jon Voight (because we all care what the guy who played "Ed" in Deliverance has to say about politics), and of course, Newt Gingrich, who was touted as the GOP's "Man of Ideas" and the "Architect of the Last Reform Movement."
If Newt Gingrich is the GOP's "Man of Ideas" and the leader that they're re-turning to in order to resurrect the party, then the Republican Party brand has just anointed the most anti-LGBT spokesperson in decades.
Gingrich has said that there's a "gay fascism" sweeping the country, and that LGBT people are prepared to resort to violence in order to advance politically. Gingrich has (as recently as April 2009) willingly partnered with the American Family Association, an organization that regularly screams against homosexuality and threatens to boycott companies who even advertise in LGBT publications.
And just last week, Gingrich appeared with Mike Huckabee on a GodTV special hosted by anti-gay marriage militant Lou Engle. Not only was Engle one of the fiercest warriors in favor of Proposition 8, the ballot measure which banned same-sex marriage in California, Engle has been the subject of recent controversy over the assassination of Dr. George Tiller, a reproductive health doctor in Wichita, Kansas nearly two weeks ago.
You see, Engle is on the record as saying legalized abortion has incurred a blood debt that can only be repaid with blood, and has publicly called for Christian martyrs to make sacrifices to defeat both LGBT rights and reproductive health for women. Engle is a deranged man.
Yet, Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee gladly share a stage with him.
Newt Gingrich is certainly a man of ideas. But make no mistake: his ideas are to strip LGBT people of basic civil rights, to win the support of extremely radical religious figures who champion "blood debts" in fighting abortion and LGBT rights, and to trash talk President Obama as a failure, even though Obama's administration is barely four months old.
That hardly seems like a visionary to me. Sure, that might appeal to the Jon Voights and the Mitch McConnells around the country. But for people who have come to believe that demonizing and hating the "other" make for bad politics, well then, Newt Gingrich is just offering more of the same.

The really scary thing is that Newt Gingrich seems to be emerging as the leading "centrist" figure in what's become of the Republican Party, while his views don't seem to have changed much from when he was regarded, fifteen or twenty years ago, as one of their right-wing firebrands.
As bad as his LGBT rants are, I'm not sure they even make my Top Ten Reasons to be Appalled.

I get so disheartened when I see this kind of news... When I saw that commercial with him and Nancy Pelosi on the couch, it gave me hope, albeit a small sliver of a ray of hope, but hope nonetheless that the two sides could start working in tandem.... Too bad, I guess I was just being naive about them and their cooperation.

Newt Gingrich? Is he the one who tried to impeach Bill Clinton on the sex scandals and ended up having ones himself?
He is the man who can't be trusted.
I never believe he is a man of ideas. He just a hoax!

Newt Gingrich is an absolutely intolerant person with an absolutely incorrect view of LGBT rights. In addition, using religion to pursue oppression against the LGBT community and LGBT rights are unjustified. It's unfortunate that there are intolerant people such as Lou Engle who use crazy reasoning to justify extreme oppression against LGBT rights and that both Huckabee and Gingrich stood by him, thus their views of LGBT rights are meritless other than for intolerance.

And what makes it all the worse - His sister is a lesbian. You would think he could have at least somewhat of a moderate view, even if he doesn't belive in equal rights for all, using words like "fascism" and "dictatorship" to describe progressive movements is already desperate enough.

Newt Gingrich needs to learn what the meaning of fascism really is. Of course during the past eight years, we saw and heard how many words and expressions which were used inappropriately within the republican party.
Clearly LGBT Americans have and still are the victims of governmental and societal fascism cloaked in laws and traditions based on religious fundamentalism.
Gingrich is indeed the ‘Man of Ideas’-----BAD---Ideas. Of course, the republican party does have a history of promoting and electing inarticulate and unscrupulous politicians.
So what is Fascism?
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

This is all very much to the point--though Nazism was its own religion, more or less. But the way Gingrich or Limbaugh use the word is solely for its emotive content, to stir the resentment of their diminishing base of angry white lower-class heterosexual men looking for a scapegoat because they're too chickenshit to confront the socioeconomic system that humiliates and exploits them.

Newt Gingrich is a senseless idiot who has the heart the size of a peanut...a very small peanut. Any guy who would divorce his wife as she is dying of cancer has no heart.
Listen my LGBT friends (I am straight) these hate mongers are kooks and most people think they are kooks. I can understand your concerns because they spew hate and that is quite alarming. But I will tell you this, your community has done more to progress the area of civil rights in recent years than any other and believe me, people are taking notice of this. This is why these nutbags seem to be popping up all over the place. Do not waste your time or lose any sleep over these people. Keep fighting for your civil rights.

Excellent, Brian. Gay fascism--Newt is looking for sound bites. It is unsettling when a public governmental offical doesn't have a clue about political science.
