Pat Robertson Prays for the End of Pro-LGBT Churches

Published July 22, 2009 @ 07:51PM PT

Pat Robertson

Last week the U.S. Episcopal Church voted to end its moratorium on ordaining gay and lesbian bishops, affirming the dignity and self-worth of millions of gay and lesbian religious folk around the country.  Pat Robertson, of course, couldn't let this moment slide by without offering a bit of tactless whining. For Robertson, the fact that the Episcopal Church moved closer toward fully embracing LGBT people into their ranks means that he's now praying for the Church's demise.

Here's what Robertson himself said on an episode of the 700 Club this week:

They have lost their way. They were taken over by this controversy having to do with same-sex marriage and the ordination of homosexual bishops. Once they got into that morass and lost their way from scriptural teaching, they didn't have much denomination left...

And there will be no tears in my life if the Episcopal Church of America just quietly goes out of business

Robertson goes on to champion a breakaway group of conservative Episcopalians, who instead of following the U.S. Church follow radical bishops from Rwanda who believe in the criminalization of homosexuality.

Robertson's popularity has tanked in recent years, and really, one has to ask if it's any wonder.  This type of mean, vile commentary doesn't send a message of hope, and certainly doesn't do Robertson any favors in selling his religion.  Who wants to be a member of a church that spends so much of it's time preaching hate, and builds its foundation on praying for the demise of other religions?

Compare Robertson's nastiness to openly gay Episcopal Bishop V. Gene Robinson's words, said last week after the Episcopal Church gave bishops permission to decide whether to officiate same-sex wedding ceremonies:

There are a lot of [people] who say they are embarrassed when people say you are the ‘gay’ church.  To this, Episcopalians should say, “You bet we are.” We are the church of the people of color, the church of women, the church of the mentally ill, a church of no outcasts."

Isn't that empowering?  And isn't that what a church's role is supposed to be anyway - empowering the disenfranchised?

Maybe Robertson could take a few lessons from Robinson.

Pat Robertson is no christian. He likes to believe that he is and is speaking for all Christians. His message is very clear, and that is one of hate. He hides behind religion, having people believe that he has God on his side, so therefore he must be on the 'right' side of the controversy. Sorry, Pat, but you are not; you are just a narrow-minded, self-serving bigot, and I'm afraid you have an awful lot to learn about human beings.

PS: To Pat Robertson: God told me to give you a message. He said that you really have to get over yourself, and begin to practice what your bible really tells you. He said that humility is a virtue, and that you must love your neighbor as yourself. He wonders why you didn't get that message before, for He is weeping for your soul.

I probably should have described the book a little...It's an insiders expose of the hypocritical world that charlatans like Pat Robertson move in. He's painted in a pretty bad light by someone who was involved in getting this modern day "moral majority" movement going and then turned against it when he saw what it becam...

Who put you in charge of the Lamb's Book of Life?  Only God knows the heart of Pat Robison.  If you are a christian, please stop the judging of other's hearts.  It only causes division in the boby of Christ which is a victory for satan.  I'm not saying I agree with everything he does and says, but think about this: if he is a christian and so are you, then you will be spending eternity with him.

The man is still losing power... although his show is still very much on ABC Family, which is a channel that was originally started by Pat himself, ABC Family has been trying to distance themselves from him. Despite the clause in the contract that requires ABC Family to show the 700 club and to keep the word "Family" in the name of the channel, this old man has absolutely no control of what goes on in that channel, considering the syndication of shows such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Gilmore Girls (shows which in Pat's eyes would probably be interpreted as promoting witchcraft and pregnancy out of wedlock) and interestingly enough, even ABC Family is becoming more gay inclusive, with programmes such as Greek... Although ABC Family is owned by Disney now.

I know this is mostly off-topic, but what I'm saying is that the man keeps losing influence as time is moving on without him.

My church is just fine thank you, and I'm as proud of the House of Bishops as I can possibly be right now!

Sorry, don't take advice from freaks that think God is going to wipe out Florida with a comet, or advocate assasinations of people they don't agree with.

Agree with above comment: Robertson is no Christian.

And yet uber-christian Robertson cries foul and claims discrimination of HIS church when it is labeled "anti-gay" by the Episcopalians. I find this highly amusing.

Personally, I'm delighted that these pseudo christian leaders  fight each other and get entangled in these differences of christ said jesus said bible says god told me. It's to the detriment of all religions and that cannot possibly be a bad thing for humanity at large.

It is those who geal the sick, feed the hungry and clothe the naked that are the true christians, not these hypercritical leaders.

Pat Robertson is an intolerant conservative who has an incorrect view of LGBT rights. It's great that the Episcopal Church allows for lesbian and gay bishops to be ordained. Since Pat Robertson's intolerance is of no credibility, it's good that is popularity has gone because LGBT rights trumps and will always trump that kind of intolerance. Many more churches should enact the same policy which the Episcopal Church did because it's the correct thing to do.

I was upset when I accidentally stubled across the hate-fest that is the 700 club last week.  I was horrified to hear Robertson say that the Matthew Shepard "incident" was only one person, and questioned the missing outrage when thousands of evangelicals have been similarly treated. God will punish this bastard, if not in this life, then in the next.

In the meantime, of course he has no tears. He's laughing all the way to the bank, riding a wave built on hate and driven by greed.

Pat, please go see your plal Jerry Falwell sooner rather than later.

I remember when I used to be a christian and I used to watch the 700 club...

Robertson was bitching about the lack of mention of "god" in the secular media...I was like...WTF ?

Thats when he lost credibility with me right there.
