Laying the Groundwork for Marriage Equality in Maine

Now this is what proactive organizing looks like! Volunteers from EqualityMaine plastered polling places in more than two-thirds of Maine's counties on Election Day, talking to voters about same-sex marriage. There's no current initiative in Maine to legalize same-sex marriage, but EqualityMaine's efforts were still fruitful - according to reports, volunteers obtained contact information for over 33,000 Maine voters. That's a heckuva field army to mobilize, and lays some pretty substantial groundwork for any future votes around marriage equality.

Folks at EqualityMaine will be delivering more than 33,000 postcards to the state legislature in Augusta, each signed by a Maine voter who supports marriage equality. That's going to send quite the message to legislators. This action, which was the largest action conducted by EqualityMaine in its twenty-five year history, shows the power of organizing, and has provided demonstrable evidence that voters support marriage equality in Maine.
