Lady Gaga as Gay Culture Warrior
Published August 14, 2009 @ 07:49AM PT

Say what you want about Lady Gaga, but the woman certainly loves her gays. She's the cover story on Out Magazine (after already hitting the covers of Rolling Stone), and she's got a message for the globe: I want to turn the world gay.
It’s not an underground tool for me. It’s my whole life. So I always sort of joke that the real motivation is to just turn the world gay.
Lady Gaga (born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, which is a lot harder to fit on a driver's license) is quickly becoming the next big gay icon. And she notes that in large part, it's because she's always been surrounding by LGBT teachers and mentors.
I had a few gay piano teachers. I was in acting class and ballet from a very young age, and I remember being around a lot of gay boys in dance class. I feel intrinsically inclined toward a more gay lifestyle.
So yeah, it's not the hard-hitting news that LGBT activists are questioning Bill Clinton, or that marriage equality advocates are gearing up for quite the battle in Maine. But I think we all have to admit that if Lady Gaga can succeed in making the world even the slightest bit more gay, we're all better off. :)

Someones life is not a lifestyle... The seeds of bigotry and heterosexism have been sown so deep into the hearts and minds of people that it never fails to amaze me when even our supporters say such denigrating things. Even if she meant it as a joke or in a positive light, there is no excuse. The idea of a sexual orientation lifestyle goes well beyond faulty logic. It emphasizes that false stereotypes are true, and that sexual orientation is not only a choice, but it also dictates the kinds of people we are. Which of course we should all know by now that it doesn't!

What is a lifestyle anyway?
A lifestyle is how you choose to life your life, i.e. the outward expression of an intrinsic trait.
Sexuality is a unique trait because it is not visible. It is visible behaviorally and exists intrinsically.
Living a gay lifestyle is living as you wish in being gay. i.e. being out and not lying to yourself
Being gay isn't a lifestyle, living out is. Don't be so negative, your mind is too closed!

As you point out, everyone is different. Maybe it *is* a choice for some bisexual people. I don't find it denigrating, per se, but I understand where the word "lifestyle" could start to get under your skin. Did you notice Lady Gaga stated "It's my whole life." ?

It's good that Lady Gaga supports a LGBT lifestyle. The tolerance which Lady Gaga is displaying towards the LGBT community is one of equality. Being surrounded by LGBT people all her life made her the way she is today, thus what intolerant people say about LGBT people is not true. While Bill Clinton has had to be questioned by LGBT activists, it's sure that Lady Gaga is tolerant of LGBT people and incorporates some of the LGBT lifestyle.

Hey guys, I found it would be fun to make a cool video out of Lady Gaga's speech so here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOsrtSOCCcs
don't be shy to post it on your walls and spread the word! It's for a worthy cause. Lady Gaga has done an honorable thing by speaking at the equal rights rally and has now become advocate for LGBT rights.
Our underground community should support her move as we're all lucky and privileged to be living in a liberated society, unlike many parts of the world.
Peace and love to all :)
