Companies Pledge to End Workplace HIV/AIDS Discrimination

Published December 01, 2008 @ 10:55AM PST

Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDsGiven the day-to-day bleak headlines from the economic sector, it's still good to see that companies are willing to prioritize issues like workplace discrimination.  It's especially pertinent today, on this World AIDS Day 2008.

Today, the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria released a statement signed by more than 100 companies, with a pledge to ensure that hiring, promotion and retention decisions in the workplace won’t be influenced by whether a person has HIV or is thought to have it.  Who are these companies?  They are major heavy hitters, including Coca-Cola, Pfizer, Citigroup (yay!  Finally some good PR for this one!), Heineken, the National Basketball Association (NBA), Volkswagen, MTV Networks, Getty Images, and many more.  We'll include their entire statement below, but if you want to see the extensive list of companies that signed the pledge, click here.

As a member of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, my company is committed to fight HIV/AIDS discrimination and stigma in our workplace.

We pledge that our hiring, promotion and retention decisions will not be influenced by an individual’s actual or perceived HIV status.

We pledge to take prompt and meaningful action to improve our performance should we determine it falls short of these goals.

Recognizing the power of leadership by example, we pledge to use every opportunity to encourage other business leaders to make the same commitment.
