Get Rid of Your Labels About Sexual Minorities

Published August 17, 2009 @ 06:32AM PT

Absolut

Someone is challenging you to discard your labels and your prejudices about sexual minorities.  That someone is Absolut Vodka, and they're putting their marketing campaign where their mouth is, by creating a labelless bottle.  The point?  To plug equality by saying that no matter what's on the outside of the package, it's what's on the inside that matters.  And that kind of relates to people, too.

Absolut has been at the forefront of LGBT advertising for years, winning plenty of awards from organizations like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) along the way.  But this campaign, similar to the "Think Before You Speak" campaign from the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network, takes on the power of language and words to label, and how those labels create trouble when it comes to discrimination, prejudice and fear-mongering.

"For the first time we dare to face the world completely naked. We launch a bottle with no label and no logo, to manifest the idea that no matter what’s on the outside, it’s the inside that really matters. We do it in support of the people who spend their entire lives, stamped with labels by other people," said Absolut PR Manager Kristina Hagbard.

Even sleeker than a bottle with no label?  Absolut has launched a blog to talk about the no label campaign, rife with information (and a heaping dose of sarcastic snark) directed toward prejudice within and toward the LGBT community.

Companies market to LGBT folks all of the time.  But companies rarely immerse their product in the thick of the LGBT world to make a broader point about equality.  This is one advertising campaign whose central message is one everyone can buy into, whether they drink alcohol or not: In an absolute world, there are no labels.

Forty-Three Cities About to Get Their Kiss-In On

Published August 11, 2009 @ 09:48AM PT

Great Nationwide Kiss-In

The Great Nationwide Kiss-In has taken the country by storm.  First it was just a few cities.  Then a few cities more.  Then it went international.  And now organizers are looking at an event this coming Saturday, August 15, that will take place in at least forty-three cities in the United States, Canada and beyond, with the strong likelihood that more cities will add their names in the coming days.  Kissing for equal rights is about to go viral.

The Kiss-In is in response to incidents in San Antonio, El Paso and Salt Lake City  where different gay and lesbian couples were harassed or detained by law enforcement or other people for the simple act of kissing in a public place.  Kissing isn't criminal or vulgar.  Kissing is a sign of affection and love.

And the cities participating are big and small, too, and in red states and blue states.  There's Erie, PA (a certain bloggers childhood home!); Athens, GA; Fayetteville, AR; Parkersburg, WV; Chicago, IL; Tulsa, OK; Phoenix, AZ; and even the Northern Mariana Islands!  Which means that come this Saturday, kissing for equal rights will be fashionable in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Watch the Great Nationwide Kiss-In's Facebook page for more information.  And just wait until Saturday, where images like the one above will (hopefully) be shared in nearly every corner of the Americas, and even beyond.  Check out the third video from the Great Nationwide Kiss-In below, too.

A Concerted Effort to Sue the U.S. Government Over the Defense of Marriage Act

Published August 05, 2009 @ 07:31AM PT

Repeal Doma

A few weeks ago, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced that her state would be filing a lawsuit in federal courts, challenging the U.S. government over the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the 1996 Act signed into law by President Bill Clinton that prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriage.  Coakley said the reason for the lawsuit was simple:

DOMA affects residents of Massachusetts in very real and very negative ways by depriving access to important economic safety nets and other protections that couples count on when they marry and that help them to take care of one another and their families.  DOMA also directly and fundamentally interferes with Massachusetts’s right as a state sovereign to determine the marital status of its residents.

Now, activists are hoping to jump on the momentum started by Coakley and urge other state Attorney Generals to follow a similar path.  That's the motivation at least behind the Web site Defend the Law (defendthelaw.org), which announced a concentrated action alert this week to urge Connecticut's Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal, to challenge the U.S. government over DOMA.  Last year, Connecticut became the second state to recognize same-sex marriage.

The site plans on hitting other states, too (which would now include Vermont, Iowa, Maine and New Hampshire) but is starting out with a focus on Blumenthal in Connecticut.  Here's their action plea:

Marriage Equality has also been the law of the land in Connecticut since November 12, 2008.  The Attorney General of Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal, states prominently on his website, “As the public’s lawyer, I am here to defend state laws.”   Since marriage equality is indeed the law in Connecticut, we strongly urge Attorney General Blumenthal to follow Massachusetts’ lead and stand up for the citizens and laws of his state by filing a lawsuit against the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

The week of action will happen between August 10-14.  More information can be found on Defend the Law's web site.

This campaign again spotlights the important role that state Attorneys General (Attorney Generals?  Bah, pluralizing this one always troubles me...) can play in the fight for equal rights.  Here at change.org, we've had a petition going for more than a month now, urging Maryland's Attorney General to allow his state to recognize same-sex marraiges that are performed in states where marriage equality is the law. MD's Attorney General is slated to rule on this in the coming days, which could move equal rights one step closer to reality in Maryland.

And here's hoping Defend the Law's campaign with Connecticut's Attorney General moves marriage equality one step closer on the federal level.

The Great Nationwide Kiss-In

Mike and Joe

After launching a little more than a week ago, The Great Nationwide Kiss-In (a campaign organized by David Badash, David Mailloux and Willow Witte) has gone viral, spreading to more than 25 cities and more than 1,200 members on Facebook. The campaign is simple: in response to a recent wave of incidents where police or law enforcement officers harassed or arrested LGBT people for kissing, folks are coming together across the country with their loved ones, friends, etc., to show that kissing is not illegal.  Rather, it's an expression of love and affection that never merits criminalization.

The group has launched a video today that shows just how powerful a simple kiss can be. Straight, gay, black, white, young, old...it doesn't matter.  Everyone can participate in this nationwide campaign.  The details?  August 15, 2009, at 2:00pm EST.  See if your city is hosting a "Great Nationwide Kiss-In Event" here, and if they're not, please consider starting one.  Details on how to start one (which means being provided with some excellent resources from campaign organizers) can be found on the group's Facebook page.

Lastly...that picture up there?  Well, it's me and my partner, Joe.  I don't usually like to get all personal on the blog, but well, a great nationwide kiss-in event certainly deserves it. (Excuse the blurriness!) Enjoy the video below.  It should make you feel all warm and fuzzy, like there's a lot of love in this world.

Kissing for Equal Rights

Kiss-in

So far in 2009 there have been four states that have legalized same-sex marriage, several historic LGBT appointments to the White House, one additional LGBT member of Congress added (Rep. Jared Polis), and an Oscar-worthy celebration of one of the biggest heroes in LGBT history.

Sadly, there have also been two ridiculous police raids targeting LGBT folks (Fort Worth, Texas and San Diego, California), and three incidents where LGBT people were harassed and detained by police or security guards simply for kissing.  In Salt Lake City, San Antonio and El Paso, LGBT women and men were targeted simply for kissing in a public space.  Two men or two women kissing is not illegal of course, but that still didn't stop police from detaining folks.

Now, activists are fighting back, and they're doing so by staging a nationwide event - The Great Nationwide Kiss-In.  Organized by bloggers David Badash and David Mailloux, as well as Join the Impact organizer Willow Witte, the event will take place on August 15, 2009, at 2:00pm EST.  The gist?  Here's the scoop from their Facebook page:

On the suggested date and time, in a public place - whether it's a park or plaza or popular thoroughfare in your city or town - you'll bring your husband or wife or partner or boyfriend or girlfriend or good friend, and at 2 p.m., you'll kiss. It's one of the simplest things in the world to do!

Why, you ask? Why are you doing this?

After incidents in El Paso, TX and Salt Lake City, UT - where two different gay couples were harassed or detained by law enforcement or other people for the simple act of kissing in a public place - we need to make a strong statement to everyone everywhere: kissing is not a bad thing, nor has it ever been. It's not vulgar or inappropriate. It's a sign of affection that is as old as time itself. And it's a beautiful thing that we share with our loved ones every single day.

Sounds like the type of direct action that will not only send a message, but also nab some powerful images to spread the message that LGBT people can love and express love as meaningful as anyone else.  As of today, more than a half dozen cities will be hosting kiss-in events, including Boston, New York, Irvine (Calif.), Memphis, Philadelphia, Northhampton (Mass.), and San Francisco.  For my part, incidentally, this will happen right in the middle of Netroots Nation, which for me means kissing in the middle of Pittsburgh, PA.

Check out the Facebook page for more information, or to start your own kiss-in event in your own community.

Change.org Helps Negotiate Agreement Between ROCKSTAR Energy Drink and LGBT Rights Organizations

Published July 09, 2009 @ 10:03AM PT

Rockstar Line Up

Chalk this up to the power of the netroots and the willingness of a company to take a step toward equality.  Change.org, along with The Bilerico Project, The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), The Trevor Project, and Michael Rogers of PageOneQ.com have reached a bold agreement with ROCKSTAR Energy Drink, with the company releasing a statement today that affirms its support for LGBT rights, expands the LGBT-friendly corporate policies in its offices, and announces $100,000 in donations to LGBT rights organizations.

Change.org has been leading negotiations for the agreement.   Six weeks ago lawyers from ROCKSTAR Energy Drink contacted us about a post we wrote in April 2009 that raised questions about ROCKSTAR and LGBT rights, which at the time had begun circling the web.  In the time since, we have worked with all of the parties involved to reach an agreement that will affirm and dramatically expand the company’s support for LGBT rights and will substantially benefit LGBT organizations that work day-in-and-day-out to fight for equal rights and the dignity of LGBT people throughout the country, especially LGBT youth.

We’re particularly excited about the immediate financial support being offered to the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada.  The contribution made by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink will enable the Center to continue running at full capacity to serve the needs of LGBT people in ROCKSTAR’s own hometown of Las Vegas.  We’re also excited that in addition to enacting some very LGBT-friendly corporate policies, ROCKSTAR will also be supporting the National LGBT Bloggers Initiative, and in the near future the work of The Trevor Project and GLSEN.

The statement appears below.  Again, this deal would not have been possible without the efforts of bloggers, the organizations involved, or the willingness of officials at ROCKSTAR to take a stand for LGBT rights.  This is yet another sign of how netroots advocates can affect real social change.

ROCKSTAR Energy Drink Expands LGBT-Friendly Corporate Policies; CEO Russell Weiner Announces Additional ROCKSTAR Donation of $100,000 to LGBT Organizations

July 9, 2009

Las Vegas, Nevada – ROCKSTAR Energy Drink CEO Russell Weiner announced today that the beverage company will expand its LGBT corporate policies and make $100,000 in donations, shared among several prominent LGBT organizations. The donations represent a significant contribution given ROCKSTAR’s relatively small staff of 120 employees.

The contribution will be shared among the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), and The Trevor Project, and ROCKSTAR Energy Drink will also financially sponsor the National LGBT Bloggers Initiative. The donations and affirmation of LGBT-friendly corporate policies mark steps by ROCKSTAR to demonstrate support for the LGBT community.

“It has recently come to ROCKSTAR’s attention that there might be a misconception about our company’s policy and my personal support for LGBT rights,” said Weiner. “We apologize for that misunderstanding, and want to make clear today that our company fully supports our LGBT employees and our LGBT customers.”

"Some have erroneously associated our company with offensive language directed at LGBT people, specifically statements coming from Michael Savage, who is not and has never been a shareholder or officer of ROCKSTAR Energy Drink. On behalf of our company and directors, including myself and CFO Janet Weiner, I would like to take this opportunity to disavow any offensive statements directed toward LGBT people, including statements from Michael Savage. ROCKSTAR assures our customers and the general public that our brand will never be associated with any language that does not affirm the essential dignity of every person in our diverse national community."

In response to encouragement from bloggers, including social change media site Change.org (www.change.org) and LGBT news site The Bilerico Project (www.bilerico.com), ROCKSTAR Energy Drink is expanding its corporate policies related to LGBT issues. In addition to reaffirming its corporate anti-discrimination and equal opportunity employment policies, which include protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, ROCKSTAR has announced that it has included an LGBT component in their company’s corporate-wide diversity training and will begin to offer company resources for employees who may want to start an LGBT workplace group.

Additionally, ROCKSTAR will continue to offer domestic partnership benefits to LGBT employees, a company policy that has been in place since ROCKSTAR Energy Drink was founded in 2000. Under this policy, LGBT employees in domestic partnerships receive the same benefits coverage as heterosexual married employees, as well as the same protections afforded under the company’s sick leave, bereavement, leave for victims of domestic and sexual violence, and family military leave policies.

“These policies demonstrate that ROCKSTAR is committed to equality in the workplace,” said Weiner. “But while corporate policies are one plank in the struggle for equality, we recognize that supporting the LGBT population requires an even greater effort.”

To this end, Weiner announced that ROCKSTAR has pledged to give $50,000 to The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, a community-based organization which supports and promotes activities directed at furthering the well being, positive image, and human rights of the LGBT community and its allies in Southern Nevada, near ROCKSTAR’s office in Las Vegas.

ROCKSTAR has also committed $25,000 to Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), a leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students, and The Trevor Project, a leading national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among LGBT youth. Both gifts will be disbursed in 2010.

On top of these donations, ROCKSTAR Energy Drink will contribute $12,500 to sponsor the National LGBT Blogger Initiative, which provides training and support for LGBT bloggers, and pledges to support LGBT-related pride festivals in the future. These contributions are in addition to the $25,000 Weiner recently gave to Project Open Hand, a San Francisco charitable organization that works closely with LGBT communities on HIV/AIDS outreach.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to support the work of these organizations, who are at the forefront of the struggle for LGBT rights in this country,” said Weiner. “We are proud to enhance our corporate policies and contribute to these organizations, and we hope that these actions clear up any misunderstanding or misconceptions about ROCKSTAR’s support of the LGBT population.”

Candice Nichols, the Executive Director of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, said that ROCKSTAR’s contribution to the Center shows its commitment to LGBT rights and will be immensely helpful in serving the needs of the LGBT community in its hometown of Las Vegas and throughout Southern Nevada.

"We are pleased to see ROCKSTAR taking bold steps as a company to ensure the dignity and self-worth of LGBT people, both within their own corporate policies and within the city where they are incorporated," said Nichols. "ROCKSTAR's contribution to the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada will help our organization continue to provide vital services to the LGBT population of this area, including services for LGBT youth. During these tough economic times, we appreciate the significance of ROCKSTAR's contribution and look forward to working with them as a partner down the road to continue to support the needs of Southern Nevada's LGBT population."

Eliza Byard, Executive Director of GLSEN, said that ROCKSTAR’s efforts to expand support for LGBT employees and the local LGBT community are significant steps in the right direction.

“GLSEN is very pleased to have helped reach an agreement that immediately benefits the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, a community center that serves the needs of LGBT people in ROCKSTAR’s own backyard,” said Byard. “ROCKSTAR seems sincere in its efforts to affirm the dignity of its LGBT employees and the greater LGBT community, and in its recognition of the damage language can cause - damage that GLSEN confronts daily in its work in K-12 schools. We look forward to seeing continued evidence of this commitment in the weeks and months ahead, and to accepting their contribution next year so long as they continue upholding the principles they’ve publicly articulated.”

Charles Robbins, Executive Director and CEO of The Trevor Project, also said that ROCKSTAR is taking the right steps to partner with LGBT organizations.

“The Trevor Project is pleased that ROCKSTAR is moving in the right direction to act as a responsible corporate citizen that truly embraces diversity,” said Robbins. “It is important to recognize that the kind of offensive language which ROCKSTAR has now disassociated itself with can be truly dangerous, especially to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who remain at a higher risk for suicide. Whenever a company or individual supports our work, we know that it is lifesaving, and we look forward to the impact that ROCKSTAR’s systemic support will have in our community for years to come.”

Michael Rogers, the Founder of the National LGBT Bloggers Initiative, echoed these sentiments. “I'm excited to see that ROCKSTAR Energy Drink is not only committed to positive messages about LGBT Americans, but that they have demonstrated that commitment with generous support of community organizations. I applaud the company's recognition of the unique partnerships that can be built between corporations and online activists and their goal of working for positive social change.”

For its part, Change.org has been working with ROCKSTAR Energy Drink over the past few weeks to make a bold statement on behalf of LGBT rights. Both Change.org’s CEO, Ben Rattray, and Gay Rights blogger Michael Jones, have been leading discussions with ROCKSTAR.

“ROCKSTAR’s show of support for LGBT rights and Russ Weiner’s significant financial contribution demonstrate that the company is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen when it comes to equal rights for its employees and its customers,” said Rattray. “This is a model for other companies to follow who wish to make it unequivocally clear that they support equal rights for all.”

Jones added that discussions between ROCKSTAR and Change.org have shown that the company is solidly behind equal rights.

“The overtures made by ROCKSTAR and Russell Weiner to foster an LGBT-friendly workplace, as well as the generous contribution to leading LGBT organizations indicate a level of engagement with LGBT rights that should be commended,” said Jones. “This is a great example of how bloggers, companies and LGBT organizations can work together to foster equal rights.”

Bil Browning, Editor-In-Chief of the popular LGBT group blog The Bilerico Project (www.bilerico.com), echoed these sentiments. "I'm pleased to see ROCKSTAR is taking steps to ensure all their employees and customers are treated with dignity and respect. ROCKSTAR’s commitment to continuing multi-year support of the LGBT community through both organizational and blogger outreach demonstrates their willingness to move beyond any misunderstandings surrounding their company. Not many companies would be willing to reach out to their main critics and find common ground for a solution that leaves all parties satisfied; ROCKSTAR should be commended for their eagerness to correct any previous problems."
